The dazzling title “Camera Obscura” bundles impressive light and photo art projects by Przemek Zajfert, a light and photo artist born in Poland and living in Stuttgart. The basis of his projects is a simple photographic process without a laboratory: the pinhole camera, a box with a small hole and light-sensitive paper on the inside, which makes it possible to produce photographs without any additional technology and goes back to the invention of photography by Nicéphore Niépce. Equipped with pinhole cameras, people all over the world have participated in Zajfert’s projects, bought his camera box, created a photograph and sent it back to him. Through the principle of long exposure, the unmoving stands out clearly in the photos, while people or animals become fleeting and invisible ghosts. Views of places, objects and situations find their alienated imprint on the photographic paper and in this way experience a new aesthetic dimension in overlapping layers of time.
The exhibition at the Literaturhaus Stuttgart shows both the results of his participatory art projects and his own works, because Zajfert has been travelling and photographing with the pinhole camera himself for many years. His large digital archive documents his stops, city views – including a collection of Stuttgart views – and artistic approaches as well as the photos sent in by all the “photo artists” involved so far. At the vernissage, the three writers José F.A. Oliver, Dorothea Dieckmann and Heinrich Steinfest let their own obscure eye wander, show photographs taken especially with the pinhole camera and expand the visual language with exclusively written literary texts, which they present in a reading and conversation. Afterwards, the band Hawelka takes the sceptre and spices up the evening with acoustic ingredients from blues, rumble polka and psychedelic.
